Drilling Mud Gauges: Type F vs Type F-Y

Mud gauges on a rig deal with constant vibration, pressure spikes, and fluids that would corrode an unprotected instrument inside a week. The Type F series is built for that environment — heavy steel housing, high-pressure ratings, and connection options that match whatever is already on the line.
Two configurations cover the full range of mud system pressures. The Type F uses a 2″ NPT male threaded connection and reads up to 6,000 PSI — the right fit for standard mud pump and standpipe installations. The Type F-Y steps up to 15,000 PSI with a 2″ 1502 hammer union connection, which gives you a metal-to-metal seal for high-pressure mud circuits, frac lines, and well control equipment. Same gauge body on both. Same red powder-coated steel housing. Same semi-circular dial that is actually readable from the driller’s console.
Available configurations
Type F — Threaded, 6000 PSI, 2″ NPT Male
- Pressure range: 0 to 6,000 PSI
- Connection: 2″ NPT male, bottom entry
- Housing: Carbon steel, red powder coat
- Accuracy: ±1.6% full scale
- Operating temperature: -20°C to +60°C
- Lens: Impact-resistant glass or acrylic
- Display: Analogue semi-circular dial
- Installs directly on NPT-plumbed mud pumps, standpipe manifolds, and high-pressure fluid lines — no adapter needed
Type F-Y — Hammer Union, 15,000 PSI, 2″ 1502 Union
- Pressure range: 0 to 15,000 PSI
- Connection: 2″ 1502 hammer union
- Housing: Carbon steel, red powder coat
- Display: Analogue semi-circular dial, fluid-filled
- The 1502 union provides a metal-to-metal seal that holds under pressure spikes and vibration, where threaded fittings would back out or fail
- Connects directly to any standard 1502 wing nut fitting on the rig
Key features
- Heavy-duty carbon steel housing with red powder coat — absorbs impact from tools, pipe, and rig floor debris without cracking
- Semi-circular analogue dial reads clearly from several metres, even in poor lighting conditions
- Vibration resistance rated for oilfield service, so the needle holds still enough actually to read on pulsating mud lines
- Each unit carries a serial number and range identification plate for traceability and rig inspection records
- Impact-resistant lens protects the dial face from physical damage
- Service medium compatible with drilling mud, completion fluids, water, and standard oilfield fluids
Applications
The Type F fits mud pump discharge lines, standpipe manifolds, and fluid systems plumbed with NPT fittings. It is a direct swap for any worn-out NPT gauge on the rig. The Type F-Y is used where pressures exceed what threaded connections can safely handle — high-pressure mud pump systems, well-testing lines, choke manifold monitoring, and frac operations. The 1502 union matches the standard iron on most rig-up configurations, so it integrates without adapters or custom fittings. Both variants are used in well servicing operations where continuous pressure indication needs to be reliable shift after shift.
Why this product matters
A cracked lens, a corroded housing, a needle that bounces too much to read — these are the reasons gauges get ignored on site. Ignoring gauges leads to missed pressure changes. The Type F series resists the damage that makes other gauges unreliable. The heavy housing takes impact. The vibration resistance keeps the needle from jumping. At 15,000 PSI on the F-Y, a leaking gauge connection is not just a nuisance — it is a safety hazard. The hammer union eliminates that risk with a positive mechanical seal. Whether you need 6,000 or 15,000 PSI, the goal is the same: a pressure reading the driller can actually trust.
Additional information
For the Type F, use a thread sealant compatible with drilling fluids on the NPT connection during installation. Confirm system pressure does not exceed the 6,000 PSI rating during surge or water hammer events. For the Type F-Y, confirm the 1502 union size and figure number match the mating connection on your system. The gauge should be isolated and bled down before connecting or disconnecting — stored energy at 15,000 PSI can cause severe injury. Inspect the union seal ring before each make-up and replace it if any damage or deformation is visible. Both variants should be depressurised before removal for inspection or replacement.
