Kelly’s connections take a beating. Every joint makes up and breaks down the threads a little more. Replace the Kelly? That is an expensive operation and a lot of lost time. A saver sub sits between the Kelly and the drill pipe, taking the thread wear so the Kelly does not have to. When the sub’s threads are done, you swap it out. Minutes, not hours. And the Kelly stays in service.
All saver subs listed here are manufactured from AISI 4145H-modified alloy steel and are fully heat-treated. Thread profiles are CNC-machined and finished with a phosphate coating for corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties are controlled in accordance with API Spec 7-1.
Available configurations
Variant 1: 6-5/8″ REG PIN x 4-1/2″ IF PIN (Standard)
- Outer diameter: 7-1/4″ (184.15 mm)
- Inner diameter: 2-3/4″ (69.85 mm)
- Length (shoulder to shoulder): 220 mm
- Connections: 6-5/8″ REG PIN, 4-1/2″ IF PIN
- A straightforward Kelly-to-drill-pipe crossover that absorbs thread wear from repeated make-up and break-out cycles
Variant 2: 4-1/2″ IF PIN x 4-1/2″ IF BOX (with Stress Relief Groove and Boreback)
- Outer diameter: 6-3/4″ (171.45 mm)
- Inner diameter: 2-3/4″ (69.85 mm)
- Length (shoulder to shoulder): 300 mm
- Connections: 4-1/2″ IF PIN, 4-1/2″ IF BOX
- Stress relief groove distributes stress at the thread root, reducing the fatigue cracking that ends standard subs early under high-RPM rotary drilling
- Boreback smooths the internal bore transition, cutting turbulence and eliminating a common stress riser at the pin-to-box interface
Key features
- AISI 4145H modified alloy steel — the same grade used in drill collars and heavy-duty downhole tools
- Full heat treatment for controlled hardness, strength, and impact resistance
- CNC-machined threads for precise engagement and consistent make-up torque
- Phosphate-coated exterior resists corrosion from drilling fluids and environmental exposure
- Manufactured in accordance with API Spec 7-1
Applications
Installed between the Kelly (or top drive crossover) and the top joint of drill pipe during rotary drilling operations. The sub absorbs the thread wear that would otherwise damage the Kelly’s connection. On rigs running continuous rotary drilling programs, the saver sub will need periodic replacement — but that replacement costs a fraction of what a Kelly rework would run, and it takes minutes instead of hours. For drilling programs with high RPM and torque, the stress relief variant extends sub-service life under cyclic loading and reduces the risk of sudden downhole failures.
Why this product matters
Thread damage on a Kelly can shut down operations while the crew rigs down and sends the Kelly for re-cutting. A saver sub is a consumable by design. It wears, it gets replaced, and the Kelly stays in service. The math is straightforward — the cost of several saver subs over a well program is far less than one Kelly repair or replacement. The stress relief variant takes that a step further. Standard subs without the groove tend to crack at the last engaged thread under high cyclic loads. That crack does not always show up during visual inspection. It propagates until the sub fails — sometimes downhole. The stress relief groove and boreback address the root cause of that failure mode.
Additional information
Full material traceability is available on both variants. Each sub undergoes dimensional inspection and thread gauging before shipment. Material certificates and heat treatment records are supplied. Confirm connection types, sizes, and bore requirements against your Kelly and drill pipe specifications before ordering. For high-torque drilling programs, the stress relief variant should be considered over the standard configuration. Store all subs with thread protectors installed to prevent handling damage.
